Birthday Girl

Today is my birthday.

As I get older my birthdays seem to be something like a double edged sword.

On the one hand I feel lucky to be here, how many people pass away with out getting to be 34 years old?   Having a family with a beautiful little girl, a busy little boy,  a handsome and  rugged,  lovingly obnoxious  husband?

On the other hand I feel my youth slipping away.  I was talking to a friend about something that happened when I was in high school …when  I realized that was 20 years ago!

WHAT….When did that happen?

The “boys” at the grocery store and restaurants now call me ma’am.

I know it’s the natural progression on things, but it’s a hard pill to swallow..

I decided to take a birthday portrait, wow…not easy to look at my self on my  24″ monitor when I already feel sensitive about the aging process.

School Days

I spent some time this morning at Beauty’s preschool.

She works so hard and I am proud of the progress she is making.

As I watched her I noticed something… all her work, pictures and paintings are done in just one color—hot pink.

She is a girl who knows what she likes, that is for sure.

Too Cold To Play

I know it is only January , but enough with the cold already.

My kids are dying for some outdoor activity.

We tried going out this afternoon, but quickly changed our minds.

I need the fresh air for my sanity, so do my kids.

But when it is so cold the fresh air actually makes you gasp, that is no good either.

Pink, Pink and more Pink

Beauty’s adopted a Punky Brewster/ Blossom style of  80’s dressing.

Every outfit consists of three layers: a top, a ruffled skirt and leggings.

There is only one color in Beauty’s world and it is Pink Hot!

I am dying to make her on of those She’s Out of Control (that late 80’s movie with Tony Danza as the dad) skirts…. the one where you cut off the legs to your jeans and sew  layers of ruffles to the bottom to make a skirt.

Totally awesome 80’s chic,  I had one my mom made from white jeans, I loved that thing.

Growing Boy

My son has reached that phase that all boys get to…the one where they are never full.

I am amazed at how much he eats, all day every day now.

I find wrappers and empty boxes all over the place and can follow them like a trail to wherever he is.

We went through 4 …yes 4 bunches of bananas this week!

While he was eating his dad’s Saturday morning pancakes, something caught my eye…..

His pjs, oh my they are now capri pants!  No man should ever wear capri pants (or jean shorts) in my opinion.

I am glad we were home, I would die if anyone else saw this!

But I guess the mystery was solved, he must have grown like 2 inches lately!

That’s why he needed all that food, he was busy growing at night in his pj’s.

I love the  band aids, perfectly imperfect!

Finger Paints

I was talking to my best friend on the phone yesterday and we had a really good talk.

We talked about our kids, how we were struggling with them, how each have different quirks and ideas of how to deal with them ….how what  they really crave is our time.

My little Beauty is an independent girl, she only does things if she thinks it was her idea.  That’s tough to parent sometimes.

The flip side is that she will play by herself and keep “busy” with out the dreaded “I’m bored” complaint.

Since I am starting my own photography business from scratch here at the house, I tend to take advantage of that fact.

A whole afternoon can go by where she has been playing and there was little interaction between us.

I feel guilty, I gave my son more of my time…he demanded it.  I also didn’t have to work…..but that was another life.

Yesterday I signed Beauty up for Kindergarten.

Part of me thought, yes I’ll get so much done!

Then I realized, this is it…she is almost gone.  Our quiet time together with her brother at school is coming to a close and I am missing it!

So yesterday, I turned off the computer and it was all about her. We finger painted, we played outside with friends, we listened to music.

It was great.

I am going to make these last few months with Beauty home count!

More of Me

I decided as one of my New Year’s resolutions to be in more pictures.

I know I mentioned it before, but when I look through family pictures someone is missing.  And it is Me.

I take the pictures and it looks like they are having all the fun, but I am there too.

Today I coerced my son when he came home from school to take a picture with me….Beauty was having none of it.

Not too bad, for a quick shot using my handy dandy remote…hopefully there will be more to come.

Pretty Light, Cold Day

It was FREEZING here today.

My kids were bundled up even in the house with the heat running.

My little Beauty had a fuzzy scarf wrapped around her head.

When the last bit of warm sun came through our front door window,  I grabbed my camera.
